Your baby’s first birthday is a huge milestone – and a cake smash session is the sweetest, most joyful way to celebrate it.
These shoots are all about fun, personality, and those little expressions you’ll want to remember forever, from curious fingers and tiny tastes to full-on cake chaos and big giggles.
I’ll guide everything gently, keep it relaxed, and capture a beautiful mix of images you’ll absolutely love and treasure forever.
Cake smash sessions take place in my studio in Dartford, Kent, where we can create a clean, comfortable setup designed around your chosen colours or theme.

A styled setup in my studio
You can choose a simple, timeless look or a themed setup. I have a range of backdrops and props, and we’ll plan the colours and feel of the session in advance.
A “clean” set of portraits first
We’ll begin with a few lovely, clean portraits before the cake comes out – perfect for framing and sharing with family.
The cake smash itself (the best bit!)
Then it’s time for the fun! Some babies dive straight in, others take their time. Either way, I’ll capture all the little reactions and expressions as it unfolds.
Outfit options and guidance
You’re welcome to choose from my client wardrobe for baby outfits, or bring your own. I’ll also share tips on what photographs best (and what’s easiest when cake is involved!).
Simple cake guidance
You’ll receive guidance on what kind of cake works best for a smash (size, icing, colours), so it looks great and is baby-friendly.

Before Your Session
Once you book, I’ll help you choose a theme or colour palette (or we can keep it classic if you prefer). I’ll also share a simple checklist of what to bring, outfit suggestions, and cake tips so everything feels easy and stress-free.
Most families book their cake smash session around 4–8 weeks before the birthday, especially if you want the images back in time for a party or invitations.
During Your Session
Cake smash sessions are relaxed and baby-led. We’ll start with a few clean portraits, then bring out the cake and let your little one explore at their own pace.
I’ll guide you throughout, keep the atmosphere calm and playful, and work quickly enough to capture all the key moments without overwhelming your baby.
After Your Session
Within around two weeks, you’ll receive a lovingly edited private gallery to view and choose your favourite images.
Your final images are delivered in high-resolution digital format, ready for printing, sharing, and framing. You can also choose to purchase prints directly from your gallery.

Cake Smash Photography FAQ
Do you provide the cake?
The cake isn’t included, but I’ll give you simple guidance on what type works best (and what to avoid), plus ideas for colours that photograph beautifully. I can include a themed cake at an additional cost.
What should my baby wear?
You can use an outfit from my client wardrobe, bring your own, or keep it simple with a nappy cover. I’ll share suggestions based on your chosen setup.
What if my baby doesn’t like the cake?
That’s completely normal. Some babies are cautious, some are all in! I’ll work patiently and capture a lovely variety either way, including clean portraits and little interactions with the cake.
Where does the session take place?
Cake smash sessions take place in my studio in Dartford, Kent, where I have everything set up for a comfortable, styled shoot.
How long does a cake smash session take?
Usually around 1–1.5 hours, depending on which is your preferred package and how your baby settles.
When should I book?
If you’d like your photos back for a birthday or party, I recommend booking 4–8 weeks in advance where possible.
